Seal Engraving is an ancient art in Chinese history. It is a combination of Chinese Calligraphy and carving. This art evolved out of practical reasons. During the Qin Dynasty (221 ~ 210 B.C.), there existed a traditional art form known as Xi (literally translated as ' the imperial seal'), which was meant for royal use only. From the Tang Dynasty (618 ~ 907) onwards, through the early years of the Sung (960 ~ 1279),Yuan (1279 ~ 1368), and until the recent years of the Ming (1368 ~ 1644) and Qing Dynasties (1644-1911), this seal engraving art, alongside with the development in Chinese calligraphy, has gradually evolved as a unique combination of artistic creations and calligraphy. Throughout its evolution, there were industrious productions of this art form, which were getting more and more sophisticated. This contributed to the proliferation of different expertise and style in Chinese seal engraving.
