CAD and Design

I am available for other specialized work in the whole Design / CAD / CAM / Previsualization / New Waterjet & Laser Applications / Prototyping etc. world. Maybe you want a part or assembly of something designed, or a quick design study done, or a previz of a machine integration into your factory or something designed in AutoCAD or Inventor. Maybe you need advice after you talk to a waterjet machine salesman or two. I am available for consultations, international travel, work and/or relocation, with advanced notice.

We can negotiate a fee structure and payment plan depending on the work to be performed and deliverables. You can contact me through this site or find me on LinkedIn.

Some recent products I have done

I've been working for a lux home accessories company in Manhattan for almost three years now. Most of the work is designing new light fixtures, bathroom vanities, mirrors, and things like that. A lot of the light fixtures are new versions of old fixtures, particularly from the Art Deco period in the 1920s and 30s. Below are some products that I have done the redesign for at Urban Archaeology. Usually I work from a photo. I create the 3D CAD model in Inventor, and then work up the drawing package for fabrication in AutoCAD.

Reproduction of Art Deco wall sconce (67 KB)This is a recreation of a design made by Albert Cheuret in the 1920's. I saw this on display and modeled it in Inventor from the photos I took. The metal parts were done as rapid prototype models and used as mold patterns for the brass castings. The petals are all carved from alabaster stone. They are very thin at the top.

Art Deco Style sconce for ADA applicationsThis is a smaller version of the above light, made to satisfy ADA requirements for no more than 4" projection from a wall. It was made the same way as the full size version, but with a smaller spread of alabaster petals. It looks fantastic paired beside a mantle or mirror.

Art Deco 5-sided pendant (36kb) Art Deco Style 5-sided pendant with alabaster (23kb)This light was recreated from a photo in an auction catalog. It is another design by Albert Cheuret, the same designer of the sconce at the top. I had to envision how the original would have been put together from just a single photo. I made this version with the reeded tube to change the overall height. There is also a single fixed height decorative stem that was made as a 2 piece cover. What makes this light so different is that it has 5 sides instead of an even number.

Large Hanging Lantern (98kb)The original light fixture was in the shop for restoration, so I redrew it part by part, built the model in Inventor, and tweaked it slightly for our fabricators to make. They created this fixture and a slightly shorter one I designed on the first try, with no revisions.

Art Deco Style alabaster pendant (36kb)This light was recreated from a small, poor quality black and white image on a fax. The beautiful finial is three parts, with the 2 ribbed cylinders aligning when assembled. The shallow alabaster bowl has carved flutes around the rim. For this light I designed it so that the pendant stem can be any length, or it can be mounted close to the ceiling as a flushmount.

Art Deco Style alabaster pendant (47kb)This light was recreated from an original desk lamp thought to be designed by Mouille.

Mouille inspired wall sconce (48kb)This sconce was inspired by a desk lamp. In fact it uses some of the same parts in the pivoting head. It swivels at the base and pivots at the head. Perfect paired beside a bed or work table.

Ruhlmann Style drawer pull(22kb)This drawer pull was inspired by one seen on a chest of drawers designed by Ruhlmann, the originator of Art Deco in 1925.

Ruhlmann Style drawer pull(25kb)This handle lever set was inspired by one designed by Ruhlmann. It was in the apartment in Paris of Lord Rothermere, that Christie's auctioned off in 2009.

Ruhlmann Style door pull(22kb)This large door pull was inspired by one seen in the same Lord Rothermere apartment as above.

All of the above items are products of Urban Archaeology in New York. Photos by Tina Lau / Urban Archaeology. Contact UA for pricing and availability.

I currently live in Lower Manhattan and can telecommute anywhere in the world. I am available for international travel at your expense. I have a commercial license for my Autodesk Inventor Series software and for my Adobe Creative Suite 2 software. I strongly believe in holding proper licenses for software and I support efforts to stamp out software piracy. It is very expensive for me to be so honest, but I justify it this way: if I was offering a particular product or service, I would not want to lose business to piracy either. It is only right.

Stavros uses and endorses Autodesk Inventor Series 9 through 2011 and AutoCAD 2005 - 2011 , Adobe Creative Suite 2 Premium and Alias SketchBook Pro2 (now owned by Autodesk) software. For hardware, it's an Alienware MJ12-7700 mobile workstation, IBM ThinkPad A21p and X22 laptops, Wacom graphics tablets and a 3Dconnexions SpaceBall. I have experimented with Google's SketchUp 3D CAD software. It is quite easy to use and very good for quick mock-ups, natural lighting design studies, and for getting proportions right. But for designsthat will be made, I use Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD for the modeling and shop drawings.

Furniture - Metal Chairs, Wooden Stools and Chainmail Divider Screens

I like to design using metal, obviously. This has extended into metal fabrics. In particular chainmail as a design element. I have it featured as part of a room divider screen and a seat fabric in my designs. I have done jewelry pieces too and would like to try clothes and bags next. I also have an interest in woodworking and would like to eventually have a nicely-kitted shop where I can do some weird things like steam bending, hand carving and timber frame building construction. I have a great admiration for old timber frame barns and how they have withstood the test of time. In an age where buildings are put up at the fastest pace possible, using the cheapest materials on the market, for a lifespan of 30 years or less, a timber frame still outclasses and outlasts anything built today. Long after a postmodern designer home has become tired and boring, a timber frame building will still entice with its simplicity, the warmth of material, its solid structure and its endless possiblities.
