31sth Mar 04: --------

I've been enjoying the sun now that school's out and exam's in a week. Map-cap gymming and running coupled with not-so-mad-cap studying. I really like running in the morning sun, which is so impossible when school is in. Have not been timing my runs cos I've been trying out new rout4s with friends.

And its Japan 2 - 1 Singapore in tonight's world cup qualifiers. Its a step forward for Singapore soccer...

Within your heart, keep one still, secret spot where dreams may go.

12th Mar 04: white band

Patho exam looms in 4 weeks. Ortho clinicals are next week. I've just typed the last letter for my 2 write-ups, seminar presentation and debate finished weeks ago, my backache is remitting so there, no more excuses:

 impossible is temporary.

Osteosarcoma

Active teen

Heart-wrenching combination

21st Feb 04: bumble bee no more

The running starts here.

15th Feb 04: tv is supremely time consuming

I gotta wean myself off the goggle box. On the chopping board this week: write-up (at least one), fractures, knee examination, x-ray atlas, bank, ionic equlibria & alkane, alkene notes, Nemo for my sis, prep for debate, prep for presentation, gym with the guys, daily ab toning, sleep...

Sleep is good. And after I shake off my cough and flu, running will be good.

9th Feb 04: poser

What is the fastest way to get medical students out of the tutorial room after an OSCE tutorial?

Get the tutor to ask for volunteers to keep the equipment and bring it up to the 3rd level office.

5th Feb 04: easy

Mr Easy Lee, I got to know better during O&G posting and we're studying pathology together. Its always nice to get out of that insular shell and know people outside the cg. Easy, though eccentric, is certainly Mr Nice Guy.

Today, I got my belated birthday present from my cg: a black sweater. Not as thick as my current Nike one, so it would be easier to carry to combat the Siberian climate in LT 29. Thanks guys !

Tomorrow, the cg is going back to RJ for lunch and we're taking photos! Why? Because RJ is moving next year!! And the stall 3 uncle would be retiring!!

Saturday will be exercise and chill-out day at Easy's place. Yup, after that, it will be academia-macademia-no-nonsense, at least until the 4th year finals blows over.

Oh yes, and I think I survived O&G.

31st Jan 04: retail therapy

Bought a Panasonic DMC-LC 33 with Chunrong's help. Cathay Photo at Peninsula Shopping Centre certainly offers good prices and value-added services. Got a SD 128 mb card for just $80. The 3.2 megapixels cam cost me just $440. The Leica lens was the clinching factor.

So what's this retail therapy for? To mark the end of a long week of arduous tests for O&G.

Recently, I'm doing quite a bit of online banking, so I've been keeping up to date with security issues, in particular trojans that can slow your system or siphon your passwords. I'm now part of the team at an anti-spyware forum, where I'm learning to help people plagued by trojan-related problems.

Tomorrow, I'll be visiting some homes of the trainees of MINDS and Monday will be slacking day with Aaron & gang. I'll probably do some Feb birthday cards between now and Monday. Real work starts at NUH orthopaedics on Tuesday.

24th Jan 04: 6 demerit points for speeding part 2

Today I learn that Pipelining is much more efficient that these high numbers of connections (each connection has to be negotiated via TCP/IP which slows down a connection, and lots of connections are simply less efficient than a few connections that are pipelined...). So bullocks to the settings in the previous entry !! Again, type "about:config" in your Firebird address bar to change these settings. Makes your picture and flash intensive sites work faster.

"network.http.max-connections
",
64;
"network.http.max-connections-
per-server",
8;
"network.http.max-persistent-
connections-per-proxy",
16;
"network.http.max-persistent-
connections-per-server",
4;
"network.http.pipelining",
true;
"network.http.pipelining.
firstrequest",
false;
"network.http.pipelining.
maxrequests",
6;
"network.http.proxy.pipelining",

Did a 60 min run with Allan today. Drizzle made it cool. The Kent Ridge Park 600 m-initial-45-degree incline was a killer ! Sorry, Allan, I need more training !

And today was another 4 hour obsterics summary by John Yam. Will work on infection in pregnancy, isoimmunisation,  menopause and postpartum advice tomorrow.

17th Jan 04: 6 demerit points for speeding

 Internet browsers do come with conservative settings. It's like walkie-talkie communication: one instruction, confirmation, next instruction, confirmation. If you're on cable or adsl, you should maximise your resources by having your browser process a whole string of instructions without waiting for confirmations.

Tweaked the speed of my Mozilla Firebird and now it loads flash sites 10 times as fast !!  If you are a Firebird user too, these are the configuration changes to be made:

"network.http.max-
connections",
128;
"network.http.max-connections
-per-server",
48;
"network.http.max-persistent
-connections-per-proxy",
24;
"network.http.max-persistent
-connections-per-server",
12;

Just type "about:config" in your Firebird address bar and modify the above numbers. Original numbers are probably 24, 8, 4 & 2. Change them to 128, 48 ,24 & 12. Try lower multiples if you're on dial-up. Will search for Microsoft IE speed tweaks when I'm free. You can read more about speed tweaking here.

Today, I attended a 4 hour gynecology summary lecture by the fabled John Yam. Will consolidate fibroids, urogyne and gyne cancers tomorrow.

11th Jan 04: the bouncer is in

After my default browser page got hijacked (keeps resetting to coolsearch.com) for the whole of week 2 of Jan 04, I've decided to abandon Microsoft Internet Explorer (MSIE) to try Mozilla Firebird. Along with the change, I hope to get less hijackings, less trojans, less worms and less slowdowns... And no pop-ups ! Yes..... the door bitch  ( Kerio ) says, "Trojans & worms are not allowed !"

04th Jan 04: compulsive shopping

I marked 2004 with the acquisition of yet another book: Perdido Street Station by China Mieville. Now I have 2 huge books, this and Neal Stephenson's Quicksilver to read. Will probably do them after my O&G posting. Today was an afternoon of catching up with Kae Jack; and discovery of the cheapest 2nd bookstore (in Serene Centre). And it has a reading couch to boot ! Most books go at $12. Run by some young ladies whom I suspect are entrepreneurs.

Hope it survives.

During the 2 week interlude, I've been meeting up with old friends: primary, secondary school ones and those meddies on a different rotation. Not much of decent studying done, but I've decided on the 3 textbooks that I'm going to dredge this month.

Anyway, to your right, somewhere at the bottom of your screen is my Jan 04 shopping list. As you can see, there is a digital camera and a new phone (subjected to O&G posting performance standard) that I would like to lay my hands on. That would probably be my 2nd & last huge spending, after the 1st consignment of acoustic guitar, micro-hi-fi, dress shoes and plastic specs.

Well, its O&G at NUH tomorrow. One whole month.

Hope I survive.
