Chinese Civil War is a simple to mid complexity wargame on the struggles between the Nationalist and Communist parties in China from 1946-1949. One player controls the conventional Nationalist forces while the other commands the guerilla Communist forces.
The game is the standard You-go-I-go type, played on a map of northern China overlaid with a hexagon grid. Victory is determined at the end of 16 turns by the number of cities controlled.
Game components consist of a 22" by 34" map, 200 counters and 1 rulebook.
I got the game initially because I liked the theme. Later, I found that beneath the low quality production value is a little gem of a game.
The Nationlist forces start off with an advantage, and must turn it into tangible gains, by hurting the Communist forces before they become too powerful. This can be done by clearing sections of the map of Communist units and bases, and creating "safe" areas. If this cannot be done, the Nationlist forces will be spread too thin, trying to counter an impossibly growing behemoth.
