Northeast Singapore Fishing Reports

Singapore's Northeastern waters, mingling with the brackish waters of the Johor River and other minor rivers, are famous for one fish - the Barramundi. No doubt, numerous catches of large Barramundi have been reported in recent years, other catches like Golden Snapper (Ang Chor or Onga), Mulloway (Jewfish or Miang) and Threadfin Salmon (Kurau), Grunters (Guhud), Diamond Trevally (Chermin) and large Garoupas (Sek Pan) have not gone unnoticed. Here are the reports.

Ubin

7Oct02-A short while back, I made a few short trips to the shallow waters south of Ubin (around the fish farm region east of Ketam Channel). Each trip produced some fine Diamond Trevally up to 1.5kg which made some good first runs. Mr Koh takes the prize here with the biggest Chermin this season. (Pictures will be up soon.)Strong winds were blowing from the South, which made anchoring a little difficult because the current in that region is generally East-West on a rising tide and West-East on a falling tide. When the wind got unbearable, I usually took shelter around Changi. The winds are expected to die down soon. In fact, two days ago I was down by the boatyard and I noticed that the wind was not strong at all. Maybe it's time to launch the boat again.

Pasir Ris

7Oct02- The Kelongs here have been quiet recently, so has the old man. Perhaps he knows that there's nothing much for us to catch around his area anymore, with his numerous fish traps set all over the place. Besides some small Garoupas less than 500g, nothing really interesting has turned up here in the last month.

Tekong

Changi

7Oct02- Yup, this is my sheltered spot (from the South wind, that is) which produced a few Grunters around the 1 kilo mark in recent trips. Clarence landed a beauty during a double-hookup on a trip with my brother.(Pictures will be up soon.)

Horsburg

7Oct02- Obviously, the wind out there has died down a little, making several good spots available to Horsburg anglers. Three weeks back, there were plenty of good sized Snapper (1kg-3kg) and a school of large Miang were patrolling the wrecks off Horsburg around the 40m mark. Twp weeks back, the Miang were quiet but the large Snappers were hot on the bite (2kg-5kg) and several boats made good catches of Snapper. Last week was not too good, with strong currents making fishing in deep water almost impossible. So, many of the boatmen decided to go for pelagics at the unjams off Bintan instead, landing countless juvenile Dorado up to 5kg and Tuna up to 3kg. Good fun, but not the fish most people want.
